Klamath Basin

We have been fishing the Williamson River the most over the last few weeks. The fishing has been really good with most days encountering a dozen fish or more and seemingly everyday we are hooking at least two large Redband trout over 24 inches. The tactics we have been using to the most success is nymphing attractor patterns under an indicator as well as continued success fishing leech patterns on intermediate lines. We have had success with black as well as olive and maroon leeches. It seems to be effective to try multiple colors in each hole as we have had success quite regularly after switching the color of our streamers.

Rocky Point on Upper Klamath Lake has been fishing well for us stripping Leeches and suspending them under an indicator while resting between extended casting sessions. Also chironomids have been producing well for us. The water temps in Agency Lake are on the rise and the trout are seeking their cold water refuges of the summer months. We have not fished the Wood River in the last few weeks but have heard good reports of fish being caught here as well.

Fishing on all of our Klamath Basin destinations should continue to fish well through the summer months and is always a responsible place to target trout with the numerous locations to fish these spring fed sanctuaries of the warm summer months of July and August. As always chances to encounter large Redband trout up to and exceeding 30 inches is always possible in the Klamath Basin.

Upper Rogue River

The Rogue River is starting to fish better just in the last week. The early July summer season has been slow at best up until just the last couple of days. I’ve heard two reports of multiple steelhead being hooked and the fishing should continue to improve as more and more fish enter the upper river seeking the colder water temps of the upper river above the town of Gold Hill. July and August will reward anglers with some of the hottest fish of the season as all of these fish are fresh from the ocean and generally most fish encountered are dime bright chromers. Swinging surface oriented dry and wet flies in the low light conditions of the early morning and later evenings can produce and I will generally switch over to sink tips and weighted flies in the full sun of the day to continue to have a chance at swinging up a steelhead throughout the day. As always nymphing tactics can produce fish all day long. It’s nice to hear of some fresh fish showing up now after the first 2 weeks of July being quite slow.
